BuildOn shares results of intelligent-building operation tools applied to demonstrator buildings

News

Five new infopacks show how BuildON's smart-building solutions performed in real buildings across Europe.

The BuildON project has published a set of five infopacks documenting its demonstration sites across Europe. Each infopack tells the story of one pilot: the building and its starting point, the technologies deployed, how end users were involved, and the lessons learned.

Together they show how BuildON’s tools and services perform across different climates, building types and ownership models, from public and commercial buildings to social and private housing. The infopacks are a useful guide for potential replicators, such as building owners, facility managers and municipalities looking to apply smart technologies to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings.

Athens & Volos, Greece

Led by CORDIA, the Greek pilot spans two commercial sites with contrasting climates: a Volvo Group car dealership in Athens and a Campari Group office building in Volos. Both gained IoT monitoring, renewable energy integration and smart controls to support data-driven facility management across some 1,250 m² of conditioned floor area.

Gdynia, Poland

Led by the Municipality of Gdynia, the pilot brought smart monitoring and control to a municipal kindergarten, adding automation to an existing heat pump and PV system. The building recorded a 16% improvement in energy efficiency, with the approach identified as replicable across around 100 public buildings in the city.

Helsinki, Finland

Led by the Helsinki City Housing Company (HEKA), the Finnish pilot equipped a recently renovated social-housing block with 207 electronic radiator thermostats and indoor-climate sensors, demonstrating the potential for district-heating demand response and load shifting in residential portfolios.

Moret-Loing-et-Orvanne, France

Led by EDF, the pilot turned an office building at EDF Lab Les Renardières into a live testbed, feeding real-time data into the BuildON platform and deploying a digital twin and an indoor-environmental-quality optimisation service. It reported a 22% reduction in energy consumption driven by heat-pump optimisation.

Valladolid, Spain

Led by VEOLIA, the pilot fitted a 14-storey residential building — where major renovation was not feasible — with 242 smart thermostatic radiator valves and a second-life PV battery, showing how intelligent heating control can cut costs without sacrificing comfort.

Across all five sites, the pilots highlight recurring lessons: the challenge of integrating new technologies into existing infrastructure, the importance of reliable data, and the value of involving facility managers and occupants early.
