The Horizon Europe project BuildON — Affordable and digital solutions to Build the next generatiON of smart EU buildings — announces its final event.
For the past three years, the project has been testing affordable, interoperable digital tools. The goal: demonstrating how they can be applied across five demonstration sites in different climates and building types. On 20 October 2026, as it approaches its close, the BuildON team invites researchers, industry representatives, policymakers and building-sector stakeholders to its final event in Milan.
The event will take place in the context of NetZero Milan 2026. The focus will be on what it takes to move intelligent building operation from pilot to practice.
About the event
The morning will open with a keynote on the future of intelligent building operation, followed by a roundtable tackling a direct question: what is still preventing intelligent building operation at scale? Voices from industry, research and national energy agencies — including the sister project SMARTeeSTORY — will compare perspectives on the barriers and opportunities ahead.
The event then turns to BuildON’s own answer to that question: the Smart Transformer Toolbox. Partners will present the interoperability framework and semantic models behind it, the digital tools that bring monitoring, assessment, prediction and optimisation together, and how these have performed across the project’s pilot buildings — sharing validated results, lessons learned and best practices from the field.
The closing session looks beyond BuildON itself, with a roundtable on market uptake, citizen and end-user engagement, and European policy development, responding directly to BuildON’s own policy brief. The project coordinator will close the day with a look at what has been achieved and what comes next as BuildON reaches its final month.
The event will be featured by panellists from relevant sectoral organisations, including Schneider Electrics, ENEA, and the University of Cassino.
The BuildON team will present the final results and achievements of the project. These include digital tools, AI-based services and decision-support solutions for smart building management. The programme will also include panel discussions to explore the opportunities and barriers to scaling up such solutions, and looking ahead at the future prospects — market, policy and social — beyond the project’s lifetime.
