On November 19-20, BuildON partners convened in Athens for the project’s 3rd General Assembly, marking the 18th month of its journey toward making buildings more sustainable and better integrated into the renewable energy transition.
Hosted by the National Technical University of Athens, the event featured discussions led by project coordinator CARTIF and included participation from 20 beneficiaries representing nine European countries.
The meeting highlighted progress on the BuildON Smart Transformer Toolbox, a cutting-edge solution aimed at improving energy efficiency across various building types. Designed to support next-generation building energy management systems, the toolbox incorporates advanced MAPO (Monitor, Assess, Predict, Optimise) services and a Universal Building API, enabling seamless system integration and control.
Empowering Smarter Buildings
By leveraging digital twins and intuitive decision-support tools, BuildON seeks to empower facility managers and building occupants to understand and expand their buildings’ smart capabilities. The project aims to deliver affordable, adaptive, and easy-to-install solutions aligned with the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) framework.
During the last 18 months, partners have made progress in developing the tools and methodologies needed to achieve these ambitious goals. Notable advancements include:
- Release of the first Version of the SRI Calculator Tool: This cloud-based tool automates the monitoring and assessment of SRI levels for pilot smart buildings. It is accessible via the web and facilitates streamlined evaluations.
- Release of the first Version of the Smart Buildings Readiness (SMURF) Assessment Tool: This tool offers key insights and tailored solutions for users aiming to upgrade their buildings to meet a user-defined SRI target. It minimizes the number and cost of necessary interventions while ensuring compliance with smart-readiness objectives.
- Deployment of the Digital Logbook on a web server: The Digital Logbook serves as a centralized repository for essential building data, including records of major events throughout a building’s lifecycle (e.g., ownership changes, maintenance, refurbishments). It features user-specific interfaces for end-users, professionals, and building owners, acting as a versatile data aggregator tailored to various needs.
In addition, user-friendly tools for interaction between humans and smart assets will be offered through two different solutions tailored to residential and tertiary buildings. During this period, the first steps have been completed to define how users will access the functionalities delivered by the BuildON solution.
Finally, the first version of the architecture components has been released, while a subset of the MAPO functionalities has been tested in a controlled environment.
Testing and Validation Across Europe
The BuildON tools and services will be validated and tested at five pilot sites located in Spain, Finland, Poland, France, and Greece. Local partners are working to adapt the tools to local contexts and systems while prioritizing interoperability solutions to enhance accessibility for end-users.
“Interoperability remains a key objective in the ongoing work of the BuildON project. By ensuring compatibility across tools, we are closer to achieving a fully comprehensive and integrated Smart Transformer Toolbox that can be applied to a variety of buildings across Europe, helping them become more sustainable,” said Sofía Mulero Palencia, BuildON coordinator.
